Q & A WITH MARATHON RUNNER EMILY WAN [VANCOUVER]

Meet July's athlete of the month: Emily! Read her Q & A to find out some of her MUST HAVES for a great run and how she stays motivated! 

 

Q. Tell us a little about yourself.

A. I am a Chartered Accountant and an outdoor education volunteer leader with Scouts Canada in the community. I keep active during the week by organizing runs on the seawall with co-workers and on weekends I am outside: camping, hiking, canoeing. It was spin classes that got me started on wanting to be more active. When I saw how much better and stronger I felt, that encouraged me to sign up for my first half marathon. I started being addicted to running ever since. 

Q. Take us inside one of your typical workouts.

A. If I am training for a big run, I follow a running schedule of short and long runs throughout the week. If I am pressed for time I try to do pilates or HIITs - I love Blogilates, looks easy, but you feel it the next day!

Q. What are your current fitness goals?

A. I have done 4 half marathons so far, and eventually want to work out up to a full marathon. My fitness goal is mainly to do something active everyday, so that I can stay healthy even when I get older.

Q. What is a must-have item that gets you through your workout?

A. Friends and music. On Sunday mornings, my friends and I meet up for "run group" each week, usually followed by brunch and catching up - make it social, and make it fun! If I am working out by myself, nothing pumps me up more than great music.

Q. What is your definition of "be your own athlete"?

A. It doesn't mean that you have to be the traditional all-star varsity team captain. Find something that gets you moving, work at your own pace, and be proud of your own progress. Things don't happen overnight. I hated PE growing up, and was terrible at sports. Finding running, spinning and pilates helped me learn about my body, and with it, learning to build endurance, strength and coordination.
