Meet Katie, a 25 year old happiness seeking yogi. Check out her Q & A to find out how she stays inspired to enjoy life to the fullest and how yoga became her life teacher.
Q: Tell us a little about yourself.
A: I am a 25 year old happiness seeker. On my path, I have found a few major things that make me genuinely happy. They come in the form of 500 hour registered yoga instructor, registered nurse, stand up paddleboard teacher, professional aunt, sister, friend and daughter.
My goal in 2016 is to fly, to travel, to get really weirdly uncomfortable and start living this life of complete bliss and infinite possibilities.
Q: What does your regular workout look like?
A: My regular workout is nothing of the sorts. I prefer to not think of a workout as something we can put in a box, open when ready, and cheat if needed.
Asana or my physical yoga practice is my favorite method to stay physically active and fit so that I can move my mind and my attitude more freely around the things that I love. I do it when it feels right, which is often every single day, many times a day!
Q: How did you fall in love with yoga?
A: I didn’t fall in love with yoga at first believe it or not. It actually took a year off and a new voice to really change my perspective about this practice.
But then, it was magically planted like a seed after my first Wanderlust yoga festival in Vermont four years ago.
The lifestyle, the culture, the belief that every body is different yet we all want to move and live long and free is what did it for me.
Q: What keeps you motivated to stay fit?
A: My students are the ones that keep me most motivated to stay fit and healthy.
I have worked with all sorts of bodies- from those that have been traumatized by abuse, car accidents, scar tissue, years of other athletic endeavors finally catching up to them, or even just the very old or very young students who require me to be on my top notch fitness level so that I can help in some way motivate them to stay inspired, to lift them when they are feeling drained or to remind them to get physically grounded.
Q: What are some of the benefits you’ve gained from practicing yoga?
A: At the end of the day, I just want to be a good human- yoga does that for me. It helps me stay curious about who I am as a person, as a student and my intentions as a teacher. I've gained patience, and am about to gain a lot more as I sit here with some shoulder tendonitis popping up. I’ve learned to not try and do it all at once- but to go slow and enjoy this amazing process while meeting some absolutely amazing people a long the way.
Q: What’s your all-time favorite yoga pose?
A: On my yoga mat, my all time favorite is ardha chandrasana, or half moon pose. It’s ability to sling shot my heart and hips open wide open gives me my own little “new moon” feeling every time. On my paddle board, my favorite pose is sirsasana, or headstand. I love the opportunity to take my gaze from ocean waves to blue skies all in one single slow and steady breath!
